MAINTENANCE TIPS

FALL/SPRING are good times to check out your own tractor to make sure everything is ready for the cold weather.  Here is a checklist of what we do at our shop.

1.  INSPECT THE TRACTOR FOR LEAKS.  Look around the axles, inside the engine compartment and at the hydraulic hoses and fittings.  Repair or replace as necessary.

2. INSPECT THE TIRES FOR GOUGES AND CUTS.  Check the pressure.  Consult the manufacturers guidelines for correct inflation.

3. INSPECT THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM for broken or loose wires, broken lamp lenses and bulbs.  Repair or replace as necessary.  Check the battery connections.  Make sure they are tight and not corroded.  Check the condition of the battery if you have the equipment.  January is not a good time for a surprise.

4. CHECK THE TRACTOR AND ATTACHMENTS FOR LOOSE BOLTS.  We often find these in the loader mounts and the tire rims.  If you find a loose item make sure that the thread has not stripped before re-tightening.  Replace if necessary.  Some bolts require torquing to a set value.  If you don't know what it is please check with us.

5. INSPECT THE GREASE FITTINGS.  Make sure they are all present, tight and functional.  Occasionally we see fittings which will not accept grease.  Repair or replace as necessary.

6. CHECK ALL THE FLUIDS including hydraulic, coolant and oil.  Look for cleanliness and amount.  If it's been a while since a fluid was changed considering doing it before Winter.  This would be a good time to change the filters as well.  Consult the manufacturers specifications.  If your tractor is under warranty it may be necessary to follow these specifications exactly.

7. CHECK THE OPERATING CONTROLS for functionality.  If something does not work correctly it can make the operation, difficult, frustrating and even dangerous.  This check should include seat belts.  If you have a ROPS (Roll Over Protection System) it is dangerous not to wear a seat belt.  If the ROPS is folded the purpose of having one is defeated.  If you don't have a seatbelt consider purchasing a system.

8. CONDUCT A REVIEW of what you did with your tractor this past summer and what you plan for next year.  Consider whether there might be equipment or accessories which might be added.  This is a good time to start doing research.  This website is a wealth of information, hence a great place to start.

If you are not comfortable doing the work yourself or don't have the time to do it, consider having Rodick Farm Machinery perform the above work.  We are a full service, completely mobile dealer.  Our fully qualified technicians can perform all the work necessary to keep your machine reliable and work ready.  Please give us a call to set up an appointment.
